Countdown to Sitka residency!

We leave for Oregon in a little over a week.  We’ve started putting music and books into boxes.  We had hoped to go up 101 but the landslides from the recent rains have caused road blockages that may still be in effect when we come through.  So it may be I-5 for us, alas.

We are so grateful for the response to our fundraising letter! We send love and thanks for everyone’s help and good wishes.  We’d love to hear from you on this blog or on our Facebook page (do a search for Tibia Recorder Duo to find it) while we’re at Sitka.

Sitka residency coming up

The Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, on the Cascade headlands of coastal Oregon, is one of our favorite places on Earth.  And we get to spend some time there soon! Frances will be working on new pieces.  Tish will be working on a new solo program of medieval and modern music, and a new program for medieval ensemble. We’ll be working together on a pedagogical project which we hope will contribute something important to the recorder world.  More later.

Santa Barbara workshop

We’re getting ready for a short road trip down to Santa Barbara, CA for a workshop.  We’re looking forward to seeing a part of California that is new to both of us.

New Farallon CD coming!

Our quartet’s new CD of English music from the Middle Ages to Purcell will be arriving on our doorstep nearly next week! Very exciting.

Bach 106

We spent the weekend playing one of our favorite cantatas: Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit. We were up in Oregon House, CA, one of the old wagon stops on the way up to Oregon. The Fellowship of Friends, a spiritual community founded in the 1970’s, owns a huge complex there with vineyards and gardens over 1400 acres in this eastern California rural setting. The Fellowship has a choir and small orchestra, and occasionally hires outside musicians to fill in the gaps.  We didn’t know what to expect, but ended up having a very pleasant weekend playing with people who clearly shared our passion for this piece.  The other works on the program were a Bach harpsichord concerto (played on piano (!!) very beautifully), Brandenburg 6, and Cantata 29. We weren’t quite sure what the Fellowship of Friends was all about, but it seems they are concerned with being mindful at all times, and using music to help them improve their ability to be mindful. We couldn’t have been treated better – in fact we felt more appreciated than usual.

Hidden Valley Early Music Workshop

We just came back from two weeks in Carmel Valley, CA, where we do an early music workshop every November, through Road Scholar (used to be Elderhostel). The workshop was inspiring, musically satisfying and lots of fun for one and all.

Welcome to our blog!

This is the new blog for Tibia Recorder Duo. Our wonderful web designer has made it easier for us to update our site, including having a blog linked to our site.

Our latest projects were two back-to-back workshops, with short concerts. The first was a workshop in Tuscany, with a wonderful group of recorder players from the US and Canada.  Then we flew to Atlanta for a short visit with Tish’s mom in Georgia, then on to northern Alabama for our annual Rogersville Recorder Retreat!

The next Tibia event is the Next Level Recorder Retreat, February 25-28, in Carmel Valley, CA.  This is a workshop for recorder players who want an intensive 3 and half days working on technique and ensemble playing.  Our goal is to give them tools that will enable them to rise a level, if they keep practicing after the workshop!
